Powder Coatings

Powder coating is a dry powder applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". The main difference between a conventional liquid paint & powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. It is used to create a hard decorative finish that is tougher than conventional paint with less volatile organic compounds (VOC) and a more environmentally friendly approach.

Becuase powder coating comes in a pre-made powder format, its colour range is limited to a set ranges and finishes. In the standard range of colours there is less than 100 colours avaliable that cover most applications. Beyond the basic range there are specialty colours including metalics, pearls and less common palates. There are also coatings designed for high wear and tear and come with a service life guarantee. Due to setup costs, a minimum order of 100 lineal meters applies. Orders under this quantity are welcome but do attract a surcharge. Pearl and some metalic finishes also attract a service fee. We aim to have a 2-4 day lead time on powder coating for small to medium orders while larger jobs may take longer due to materials and job size. Talk to Archskirt for more information.

Anodising

Anodising is a process that changes the microscopic texture of the aluminium surface, and changes the crystal structure of the metal near the surface. Anodising increases resistance to corrosion and wear, and provides better adhesion for paint primers and glues than does bare metal. Typically anodising offers a significant advantage when it comes to ruggedness or physical wear resistance. Anodic films can also be used for a number of cosmetic effects, this allows a colour to be absorbed into the metal surface and then sealed in. The number of dye colors is almost endless; however, the colors do come in standard and non standard ranges.

Anodising is one of the more environmentally friendly metal finishing processes. With the exception of the dyes used, the by-products contain only small amounts of heavy metals, halogens, or volatile organic compounds. Integral color anodising produces no VOCs, heavy metals, or halogens as all of the byproducts found in the effluent streams of other processes come from their dyes or plating materials. Archskirt stock most lines in mill finish and natural anodised coatings. Natural anodised coating is also known as clear, as the finished colour is a uniform low sheen natural aluminium colour. Due to setup costs, minimum order quatities apply for specified colours other than natural. Our standard coating is 10 micron but custom colours and thickness are avaliable.
